The Storm Cat Award
The Storm Cat Award is a competitive program intended to promote development of promising investigators by providing a one-year salary supplement of $15,000. This program is restricted to one award per year and is named in honor of the famous Thoroughbred stallion at Overbrook Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Mrs. Lucy Young Hamilton, whose family owns Overbrook, is a member of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation’s board of directors.

The Elaine and Bertram Klein Development Award
The Elaine and Bertram Klein Development Award is a competitive program intended to promote development of promising investigators by providing a one-year salary supplement of $15,000. This program is restricted to one award per year and is named in memory of a renowned horsewoman and her late husband, a Thoroughbred owner and breeder. The grant is funded by $15,000 donations by the Klein family.

The Jockey Club Academic Scholarship:
The Jockey Club Scholarship offers $15,000 annually to a student who is pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher at any university and has demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred Racing Industry. The deadline for applications is March 31.

The Race for Education Scholarships:
The Race for Education currently offers the following scholarships:

  • The Race for Education KEEP Foundation Scholarship - available to Kentucky students pursuing a field of study within the equine, animal science or agriculture industry and/or whose family is employed in the equine, animal science or agriculture industry.
  • The Robert J. Frankel Scholarship - available to a student attending a college or university in California or New York state, pursuing any field of study, whose family is employed in the Thoroughbred industry.
  • The Washington Thoroughbred Foundation Scholarship - available to a student attending a college or university in Washington state,  pursuing a career in pre-veterinary medicine (equine emphasis) equine science, racetrack management, equine business or pasture management and equine marketing and/or communications as it pertains to racetracks, horse farms, and other related fields.
  • The Dr. Judy G. Willard Scholarship - available to a student in good standing with an Animal Science major with Equine emphasis at Morehead State University (Morehead, KY) wishing to pursue a career in the equine industry.
  • The WinStar Farm Scholarship - available to a student whose family member is employed by WinStar Farm attending a college or university, pursuing any field of study.

Schools Offering Scholarships for Pony Club Members

Delaware Valley University:
Multiple $1,000 renewable scholarships are offered for Pony Club members who are certified C-1 or higher, with a minimum of 3.0 high school GPA or ranking in the top 30% of their high school graduating class. Recommendations and an essay are required. Scholarships are dependent upon the student maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher at Delaware Valley University. Delaware Valley University offers a Bachelor of Science degree with specialization in either Equine Training or Equi-business, as well as an Associate’s degree in Equine Science. The Equestrian Center is an Official Approved Establishment of the British Horse Society and incorporates the BHS scheme in the first-year curriculum. Deadline for application is February 15th.

Lake Erie College:
First-time freshmen and transfer students pursuing a major in equine studies may apply for one of three Equine Talent Scholarships. United States Pony Club and 4H members may apply for Equine Talent Scholarships specific to their club.

Maryville College:
All Pony Club members will receive a minimum scholarship of $15,000 per year. In the event that a Pony Club member qualifies for an academic scholarship over $15,000 they will still be eligible to receive up to $2,500 per year on top of their MC academic scholarship for Pony Club experience!   Access additional details.

University of Louisville:
A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a new student who is currently in Pony Club or a Pony Club graduate and still active in the organization. The Pony Club member must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a C-3 certification or higher. U of L's Equine Industry Program offers a degree in Business Administration with a major in Equine Industry Administration. They have an intercollegiate riding team.

Otterbein University:
$1,000 renewable award is awarded to a Pony Club member with strong academic credentials. Otterbein offers degrees in Equine Science with a pre-vet/graduate school focus, Equine Administration, Equine Facility Management, and Equine Health Technology. They have an intercollegiate riding team.

Queen Margaret’s School:
$1,000 award to a new boarding student. $500 award to a new day student.  Queen Margaret’s School is a college preparatory school that offers both a Junior and Senior school for both boarding and day students. Requirements for the scholarship include a member with good standing in Pony Club of the D-2 level or higher. Candidates must obtain a letter of recommendation from their DC or CA and must submit an essay to the Admissions office with why they believe the Queen Margaret’s school can help the candidate continue with their goals in Pony Club.

William Woods University:
Offers a $2,000 renewable scholarship for Pony Club members or active Pony Club graduates. Applicants must be certified C-3 or higher, have a high school or college GPA of 3.0 and be recommended by a USPC leader. Applicants must be new students attending William Woods University. This scholarship is renewable as long as satisfactory academic progress is met.  William Woods offers majors in Equestrian Science, Equestrian Administration and Equestrian General Studies (with concentrations in Therapeutic Riding, Equine Art, Equine Leadership, Equine Media and Equine Studies). William Woods offers in-depth instruction in four riding disciplines: dressage, hunter/jumper, saddle seat and western. Applicants must submit documentation of active membership in Pony Club, documentation of riding ability at C-3 or higher, a recommendation letter by a USPC leader and be accepted to William Woods.

Wilson College:
Offers $1,000 scholarships to Pony Club members with a certification of C-3 or higher who have a high school GPA of 3.0 or better in a college preparatory curriculum and the recommendation of their District Commissioner or Center Administrator. Wilson offers majors in Equestrian Studies, Equine Management, Equine Facilitated Therapeutics, Veterinary Medical Technology, Equine Assisted Veterinary Medical Technology (new program to teach home health care for horses), and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. The College offers intercollegiate Hunt Seat, Dressage, and Eventing teams.
