Pony Club Awards College Scholarships to Members

July 1, 2012 (Lexington, KY) – Seven amazing Pony Club members were awarded college scholarships through the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. this week for outstanding sportsmanship, stewardship, and leadership through horsemanship. The recipients are chosen by the scholarship committee and administered by Pony Club based on the requirements for each opportunity.

The Dorothy Renfro Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually for higher education to an active Pony Club member who exhibits the qualities that Dorothy Renfro valued most: leadership, horse management, and volunteering time and energy to beneficial activities. She hoped to encourage horsemen and women in their academic pursuits. Receiving the Renfro memorial Scholarship is Victoria Jacks,a C-3 member of the Palmetto Pony Club in the Carolina Region. Victoria plans to study Chemical Engineering.

The Stanley R. and Martha C. Helbert Scholarship is a scholarship awarded annually to encourage Pony Club members in their academic pursuits in the Liberal Arts area such as literature, music, theater, and visual arts. Recipient Megan Herndon, isa C-3 member from the Lio Li’i Pony Club in the Hawaii Region and plans to study Communications at The University of Washington.

The Farnam Fly Control Scholarship is sponsored by Farnam Equine Pharmaceuticals. This Scholarship awards a Pony Club member for excellence in academic pursuits, and outstanding achievements in Pony Club, who has achieved a Pony Club certification of a C-2 or higher. Recipient Emma Deane isan HA certified member from the Moon Valley Pony Club in the Middle California Region. Emma is attending the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

The Farnam Supplements Scholarship is sponsored by Farnam Equine Pharmaceuticals. This Scholarship awards a Pony Club member for excellence in academic pursuits, and outstanding achievements in Pony Club, who has achieved a Pony Club certification of C-2 or higher. Cara Goode is a B level member from the Loudoun Hunt Pony Club in the Virginia Region. Cara plans to major in Biology.

The two Pony Club Jubilee Scholarships are awarded to Pony Club members for excellence in academic pursuits, and outstanding achievements in Pony Club. Applicants have achieved a Pony Club certification of C-2 or higher. The Pony Club Jubilee Scholarship recipients are Maria Filsinger and Bryn Oliver. Maria is an HA member from the North Star Pony Club in the Northern Lakes Region. Maria will attend Stanford University and study Bioengineering. Bryn Oliver is a C-3 Dressage certified member from Wentworth Pony Club in the Central New England Region. Bryn attends the University of Kentucky, and is majoring in Business Management.

The Anson W. H. Taylor Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Pony Club and The Equestrian Land Conservation Resource in memory of former Pony Club President and ELCR founder Anson Taylor. The Scholarship is awarded to a current Pony Club member who has been active with and committed to efforts on behalf of land conservation. Eliza Weeks, a C-2 member from Narrows Pony Club in the Northwest Region plans to study Journalism and Music at Western Washington University.
