The Big Easy Rolled Out the Red Carpet for the

United States Pony Clubs, Inc.

February 10, 2012 (Lexington, KY) – Pony Club has vacated the Big Easy, but they left a memorable impression. The 2012 Pony Club Annual Meeting and Equine Symposium made available over 75 educational workshops, presentations, and interactive learning experiences to more than 600 participants spanning three days. Most of the fun was held in the New Orleans Sheraton but activities were also made available on a River Boat Tour down the mighty Mississippi River, dinner on Bourbon Street, a tour of the LSU Veterinary Hospital, Laura and Oak Alley Plantations and a Masked Mardi Gras Ball. Representatives from all 43 Pony Club regions, including Alaska and Hawaii, were on hand working to improve Pony Club programming for their members and future members. Many Pony Club awards were presented at the Saturday morning Meeting of the Corporation: four clubs received 50 year awards, seven clubs received 25 year awards and for the first time, upper level members received special recognition as nine current members were awarded A-level certificates. For more information on honored clubs and members, visit http://blog.ponyclub.org/. The Saturday night Banquet and Ball were highlights for many attendees as they let their hair down to the sounds of a live Dixieland Jazz Band. More than 500 people attended the banquet and danced the night away.

The workshops and presentations were all well attended and addressed various important topics, including welcoming Polo and the proposed Integration of Western Horsemanship into the Pony Club curriculum. Another important topic was the safety of riders. Andrew Massey, MAT, ATC, Gregory Stewart, MD, and Jenifer J. Sudkamp, MCD, CCC-SLP (From Tulane University) were available to focus on concussion, including prevention, identification, care and return to participation in sport/recreation activity. Specific emphasis was given to the current standard of care in regards to concussion and equestrian safety.
