Awards Abound at USPC Annual Meeting & Equine Symposium

January 30, 2014 (Lexington, KY) – Portland, Oregon has just finished playing host to the 2014 USPC Annual Meeting and Equine Symposium held January 22-26. The over 700 attendees were treated to more than 75 educational workshops, presentations, and interactive learning experiences on a variety of equine topics.

Most of the fun was held in the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in downtown Portland. Representatives from all 42 Pony Club Regions, including Alaska and Hawaii, were on hand working to improve Pony Club programming for their members and future members. The workshops and presentations were all well attended, as well as other activities including the Trade Fair, Silent Auction, Project Fair and the Anatomy Room.

Friday’s sessions included honoring the inductees into the Academy of Achievement for 2014: Katherine Devereaux Byron, MFH; Stephanie Church; David Courreges and Mark Lloyd.

Many Pony Club awards were presented at the Saturday morning Meeting of the Corporation. Eight Clubs received 50 year awards and 12 Clubs received 25 year awards. Upper Level Members received special recognition: 12 members were awarded A-level certifications, 16 were awarded their H-A Certifications, and 5 were awarded their H Certifications. The Brookfield Land Conservation Award was presented to the Bay Hills Pony Club, Middle California Region, and the Woodbrook Hunt Pony Club, Northwest Region. The Flash Teamwork Award went to Dune Riders Pony Club, Lake Shore Region. For more information on honored clubs and members, visit http://blog.ponyclub.org/.

Also on Saturday, there was an offsite seminar held for Horsemasters and H-Bs and up. The weather was perfect as members delved into a wide range of equine-related topics. The Saturday night Banquet and Dance were highlights for many attendees as they honored the recipients of the Founders Awards for 2013: Kevin Bowie, John Doolittle, Dr. Brad Gordon, and Patsy Mattingley. The keynote speaker was David Blake, former Pony Club member, now competing internationally in Dressage. He is considered to be gifted in working with difficult horses and has taken several such horses on to great competitive success. He delighted his audience with his sense of humor and his insights on his sport. More than 500 people attended the banquet and danced the night away.

It was announced that the 2015 USPC Annual Meeting and Equine Symposium will be held January 21-25 in Crystal City, Arlington D.C., hosted by the Capital Region and the Virginia Region.
